गणितशास्त्रप्रशंसा[सम्पादन]

गणितसारसंग्रहः के 'संज्ञाधिकारः' में मंगलाचरण के पश्चात महावीराचार्य ने बड़े ही मार्मिक ढंग से गणित की प्रशंशा की है।

लौकिके वैदिके वापि तथा सामयिकेऽपि यः ।
व्यापारस्तत्र सर्वत्र संख्यानमुपयुज्यते ॥
कामतन्त्रेऽर्थशास्त्रे च गान्धर्वे नाटकेऽपि वा ।
सूपशास्त्रे तथा वैद्ये वास्तुविद्यादिवस्तुसु ॥
छन्दोऽलङ्कारकाव्येषु तर्कव्याकरणादिषु ।
कलागुणेषु सर्वेषु प्रस्तुतं गणितं परम् ॥
सूर्यादिग्रहचारेषु ग्रहणे ग्रहसंयुतौ ।
त्रिप्रश्ने चन्द्रवृत्तौ च सर्वत्राङ्गीकृतं हि तत् ॥
द्वीपसागरशैलानां संख्याव्यासपरिक्षिपः ।
भवनव्यन्तरज्योतिर्लोककल्पाधिवासिनाम् ॥
नारकाणां च सर्वेषां श्रेणीबन्धेन्द्रकोत्कराः ।
प्रकीर्णकप्रमाणाद्या बुध्यन्ते गणितेन् ते ॥
प्राणिनां तत्र संस्थानमायुरष्टगुणादयः ।
यात्राद्यास्संहिताद्याश्च सर्वे ते गणिताश्रयाः ॥
बहुभिर्प्रलापैः किं त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ।
यत्किञ्चिद्वस्तु तत् सर्वं गणितेन् बिना न् हि ॥

सुभाषितानि ०१[सम्पादन]

अगाधजलसंचारी न गर्वं याति रोहितः ।

अण्गुष्ठोदकमान्नेण शफरी फर्फरायते ॥


अकृतेष्वेव कार्येषु मृत्युर्वै संप्रकर्षति ।

युवैव धर्मशीलः स्यादनिमित्तं हि जीवितम ॥


आहारनिद्राभयमैथुनञ्च सामान्यमेते पशुभिर्नराणाम् ।

ज्ञानं हि तेषामदिको विशेषः ज्ञानेन हीनाः पशुभिः समानाः॥

अकृत्यं नैव कर्तव्यं प्राणत्यागेऽपि संस्थिते ।

न च कृत्यं परित्यज्यं धर्म एष सनातनः ॥


अकृत्वा परसंन्तापमगत्वाखलनम्रताम ।

अनुत्सृज्य सतां वर्त्म यत्स्वल्पमपि तद्बहु ॥


अकृत्वा पौरुषं या श्रीः किं तयापि सुभोग्यया ।

जरद्गवो ऽपि चाश्नाति दैवादुपगतं तृणम् ॥


अक्रोधनः क्रोधनेभ्यो विशिष्टस्तथा तितिक्षुरतितिक्षोर्विशिष्टः ।

अमानुषेभ्यो मानुषाश्च प्रधाना विद्वांस्तथैवाविदुषः प्रधानः ॥


अक्रोधेन जयेत्क्रुद्धमसाधुं साधुना जयेत् ।

जयेत्कदर्यं दानेन जयेत्सत्येन चानृतम् ॥


अक्लेशादिव चिन्तितमुपनिष्ठति सिद्धमेव पुण्यवताम् ।

उड्डीयापुण्यवतां गच्छन्ति कपोतकाः पश्य ॥

अक्षमः क्षमतामानी क्रियायां यः प्रवर्तते ।

स हि हास्यास्पदत्वं च लभते प्राणसंशयम् ॥


अखिलेषु विहगेषु हन्त स्वच्छन्दचारिषु ।

शुक पञ्जरवन्धस्ते मधुराणा गिरां फलम् ॥


अग्निकुण्डसमा नारी घृतकुम्भसमो नरः।

संगमेन परस्त्रीणां कस्य न चलते मनः॥


अक्शमो ऽसत्यसंधश्च परदारी नृशंसकृत् ।

पच्यते नरके घोरे दह्यमानः स्वकर्मणा ॥

अग्निरापः स्त्रियो मूर्खाः सर्पा राजकुलानि च ।

नित्यं यत्नेन सेव्यानि सद्यःप्राणहराणि षट् ॥६४॥

अग्नि: आप: स्त्री: मूर्खाः सर्पा: राजकुलानि च ।

नित्यं यत्नेन सेव्यानि सद्यः प्राणहराणि षट् ॥

अग्निरापः स्त्रियो मूर्खाः सर्पा राजकुलानि च ।

अग्नि: आप: स्त्री: मूर्खाः सर्पा: राजकुलानि च ।

नित्यं यत्नेन सेव्यानि सद्यः प्राणहराणि षट् ॥


अग्निर्देवो द्विजातीनां मुनीनां हृदिदैवतम् ।

प्रतिमा स्वल्पबुद्धीनां सर्वत्र समदर्शिनः ॥


अग्निस्तेजो महत्लोके गूढस्तिष्ठति दारुषु ।

न चोपयुङ्क्ते तद्दारु यावन्नोद्दीप्यते परैः ॥


स एव खलु दारुभ्यो यदा निर्मथ्य दीप्यते ।

तद्दारु च वनं चान्यन्निर्दहत्याशु तेजसा ॥


एवमेव कुले जाताः पावकोपमतेजसः ।

क्षमावन्तो निराकाराः काष्ठे ऽग्निरिव शेरते ॥

सन्तोषः परमो लाभः सत्सङ्गः परमा गतिः ।

विचारः परमं ज्ञानं शमो हि परमं सुखम् ॥


खिन्नं चापि सुभाषितेन रमते स्वीयं मनः सर्वदा

श्रुत्वान्यस्य सुभाषितं खलु मनः श्रोतुं पुनर्वांछति ॥

अज्ञान ज्ञानवतोऽप्यनेनहि वशिकर्तुं समर्थो भवेत्

कर्तव्यो हि सुभाषितस्य मनुजैः आवश्यकः संग्रहः ॥

अयं निजः परः वा इति गणना लघुचेतसाम् ।

उदार चरितानां तु वसुधा एव कुटुम्बकम् ॥

अश्वं न एव गजं न एव व्याघ्रं नैव च नैव च ।

अजापुत्रं बलिं दद्यात् देवोऽपि दुर्बलघातकः ॥

यस्य षष्ठी चतूर्थी च विहस्य च विहाय च ।

अहं कथं द्वितीया स्यात्, द्वितीया स्यां अहं कथम् ॥

शुभं करोति कल्याणं आरोग्यं धनसम्पदां ।

शत्रुबुद्धिविनाशाय दीपज्योति नमोस्तुते ॥

केशवं पतितं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवा हर्षनिर्भराः ।

रुदन्ति कौरवाः सर्वे भो भो केशव केशव ॥

समृद्धं सौभाग्यं सकलवसुधायाः किमपि यन्

महैश्वर्यं लीलाजनितजगतः खण्डपरशोः ।

स्मृतीनां सर्वस्वं सुकृतमथमूर्तं सुमनसाम्

सुधासौन्दर्यं ते सलिलमशिवं नः शमयतु ॥

लोकोत्तराणां चेतांसि कः नु विज्ञातुम् अर्हति ॥

Harder than the vajra (and) softer than the flower Who indeed deserves to (or is able to ) understand the hearts of great people ? %

अतिपरिचयात् अवज्ञा संततगमनात् अनादरः भवति ।

मलये भिल्लपुरंध्री चंदनतरुकाष्ठम् इंधनं कुरुते ॥

Excessive familiarity breeds contempt, Visiting someone too often causes disrespect. The wife of a bhilla (adivasi clan) on the malaya mountain uses the log of a sandalwood tree as fuel %

दौर्मंत्र्यात् नृपतिः विनश्यति, यतिः संगात्,

सुतः लालनात्, विप्रः अनध्ययनात्, कुलं कुतनयात्,

शीलं खलोपासनात् ।

हीः मद्यात्, अनवेक्षणात् अपि कृषिः,

स्नेहः प्रवासाश्रयात्, मंत्री च अप्रणयात्,

समृद्धिः अनयात्, त्यागात् प्रमादात् धनम् ॥

A king perishes thru bad advice

a sannyasi thru association (1)

a son due to excessive indulgence

a rishi by neglecting to meditate

a clan due to wicked women

conduct due to squabbles

shame thru wine

crops by neglect

friendship by foreign travel (2)

a minister due to lack of attachment ( to the king )

prosperity by lack of regulation

and money thru sacrifice and enjoyment.

  • (1) Sannyasis are expected to remain in

solitude as much as posible

(2) Really implies excessive separation

अपि स्वर्णमयी लंका न मे लक्ष्मण रोचते .

जननी जन्मभूमिः च स्वर्गात् अपि गरीयसी ॥

Even though Lanka is a golden land, O Lakshmana,

it does not appeal to me. One's mother and motherland are

grander than heaven itself।

दिल्लिश्वरः वा जगदीश्वरः वा मनोरथान् पूरयितुं समर्थः ।

अन्यैः नृपालैः परिदीयमानं शाकाय वा स्यात् लवणाय वा स्यात् ॥

परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः परोपकाराय वहन्ति नद्यः .

परोपकाराय दुहन्ति गावः परोपकाराय शरीरम् एतत् ॥

Trees bear fruit to do good to others, Rivers flow to

do good to others; Cows milk to do good to others - This

body is for doing good to others.

It is to assist others that the trees give fruit,

that the rivers flow, that the cows produce milk.

(By implication) our own human body also should be

employed for the assistance of others.

यस्य कस्य तरोः मूलं येन केन अपि घर्षितम् ।

यस्मै कस्मै प्रदातव्यं यत् वा तत् वा भविष्यति ॥

%

The root of this or that tree - ground with something or

the other given to someone or the other will cause either

this or that

%

नागो भाति मदेन, कं जलरिहैः, पूर्णेंदुना शर्वरी

शीलेन प्रमदा, जवेन तुरगः, नित्योत्सवैः मंदिरम् ।

वाणी व्याकरणेन, हंसमिथुनैः वापी, सभा पंडितैः

सत्पुत्रेण कुलं, नृपेण वसुधा, लोकत्रयं विष्णुना ॥

A serpent is appealing in (a state of) intoxication,

water because of lotuses, the night because of a full

moon, a woman because of (good) character, a horse because

of its' speed, a temple because of regular festivals,

language by (correct) grammar, a well by a pair of swans, a

meeting by scholars, a family by a good son, the earth

by a king and all the three worlds because of vishnu।

यथा हि एकेन चक्रेण न रथस्य गतिः भवेत् ।

एवं पुरुषकारेण विना दैवं न सिध्यति ॥

%

Just as a chariot cannot move with only one wheel, even so fate not come to fruition without human actions। % (This verse seems to be meant against those fatalists who refuse to do act, relying instead on fate.)

"Chariot with puncture stranded at juncture one wheel is not good to move it; agent all active no damn effective Fate gotta check and approve it!" % %

सद्भिः तु लीलया प्रोक्तं शिलालिखितम् अक्षरम् ।

असद्भिः शपथेन उक्तं जले लिखितं अक्षरम् ॥

Even the playful words from good people are as reliable as those carved in stone. With the bad, even pledges are as shaky as words written on water.

"Good man just say casual-like: Promise stone-engraved! Bad man swear on oath and all: Writing on a wave!" %

विपदि धैर्यम् अथ अभ्युदये क्षमा

सदसि वाक्पटुता युधि विक्रमः .

यशसि च अभिरुचिः व्यसनं श्रुतौ

प्रकृतिसिद्धम् इदं हि महात्मनाम् ॥

%

Courage during bad times, forgivance during prosperity, oratorial skills in a meeting, valour in a war, ???? during fame, and addiction to knowledge - all these come naturally to great people.

शैले शैले न माणिक्यं मौक्तिकं न गजे गजे ।

सुजनाः न हि सर्वत्र चंदनं न वने वने ॥

%

precious stones cannot be found on every mountain - a diamond cannot be found on every elephant (explanation - The Airawat elephant belonging to Indra had a diamond in his forehead), - Good people are not everywhere - sandalwood is not in every forest.

Not every mountain has gems in it, and not every elephant is adorned with pearls. Not every forest is blessed with sandal trees, and good people are not to be found everywhere.

उत्सवे व्यसने च एव दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुसंकटे ।

राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यः तिष्ठति सः बांधवः ॥

%

In a festival as well as in calamity, in a famine and in an invasion, at the doorstep of the king and in the graveyard - one who stands (beside you) is your brother

Only those can be considered kinsmen, who stand by you whether in festivities or times of trouble, in famines or when enemies threaten, at the king's court or in the cremation ground.

"Facing drug or homicide party time or barmecide stepping sprightly, palace-bound wandering on burning ground, man who keeps with you through all is true homey, brother, pal." %

शतेषू जायते शूरः सहस्रेषु च पंडितः ।

वक्ता दशसहस्रेषु दाता भवति वा न वा ॥

%

A valiant man is born one among every hundred. A scholar one among thousand, A speaker among tenthousand, however a generous giver may or may not be born.

"One brave man in hundred chaps Thousand yield a pundit, Ten of them for one that yaps, Where the man to fund it?" %

अर्थानां अर्जने दुःखम् अर्जितानां च रक्षणे ।

आये दुःखं व्यये दुःखं धिक् अर्थाः कष्टसंश्रयाः ॥

%

It is difficult to earn money, and to protect the earnings. Income as well as expenditure give pain - Fie on Money ! - which is the cause of hardship.

येषां बाहुबलं न अस्ति येषां न अस्ति मनोबलम् ।

तेषां चंद्रबलं देवः किं करोति अंबरे स्थितम् ॥

%

Those who do not have armstrength (physical strength) and those who do not have mental strength, What good can moon's strength do to them being resident in the sky ?

"Strength of bicep gone to hell blurred the mental eye, what on earth can moon-effect do from high-up sky?" %

पात्रे त्यागी, गुणे रागी, संविभागी च बंधुषु ।

शास्त्रे बोद्धा, रणे योद्धा, पुरुषः पंचलक्षणः ॥

%

Sacrificing (giving) at a deserving place, recognizing good qualities, equally dividing among brothers, knowledgable in the sciences, a warrior in wars are The five qualities of ( a good man).

क्षणे रुष्टाः, क्षणे तुष्टाः रुष्टाः तुष्टाः क्षणे क्षणे ।

अव्यवस्थितचित्तानां प्रसादः अपि भयंकरः ॥

%

Angry one moment and content another. changing moods every so often. - Even being in the good books of fickleminded people is frightening. % Even favors are to be feared from people who are happy one minute and angry the next, those people who do not have a steady mind.

"Moment wildest, moment mildest, wildest mildest now and then, mind disarrayed, what a harried dude to talk to, what a pain!" %

शरदि न वर्षति, गर्जति, वर्षति वार्षासु निःस्वनः मेघः ।

नीचः वदति, न कुरुते, वदति न साधुः करोति एव ॥

%

In the autumn, the clouds thunder but yield no rain; during the season, they rain without the thunder. The inferior man talks but does not perform whereas the great man simply performs without talking.

"Autumn cloud always loud, unendowed. What a wuss! Monsoon wonder never thunder, bending under load of juice.

Bad guy singing self-exults, lift no finger, just give speech; good man bringing big results, no malinger, never preach." %

व्रते विवादं, विमतिं विवेके, सत्ये अतिशंकां, विनये विकारम् ।

गुणे अवमानं, कुशले निषेधं, धर्मे विरोधं न करोति साधुः ॥

%

The saintly don't indulge in the following - arguments during penances, crooked thinking during times that call for discrimination, being skeptical towards the truth, transgressing laws of conduct, insulting those with high qualities, spoiling well being and acting against Dharma.

विवादे विषादे प्रमादे प्रवासे

जले चानले पर्वते शत्रुमध्ये ॥

अरण्ये शरण्ये सदा मां प्रपाहि

गतिः त्वं गतिः त्वं गतिः त्वं भवानि ॥

क्षते प्रहाराः निपतन्ति अभीक्ष्णं

धनक्षये वर्धति जाठराग्निः ।

आपत्सु वैराणि समुद्भदन्ति

चिद्रेषु अनर्थाः बहुलीभवन्ति ॥

%

% अलसस्य कुतः विद्या अविद्यस्य कुतः धनम् । अधनस्य कुतः मित्रम् अमित्रस्य कुतः सुखम् ॥ %

How can a lazy one get educated, how can an uneducated man earn wealth, how can a penniless man have friends, and how can anyone be happy without friends ?

अस्माकं बदरीचक्रं युष्माकं बदरीतरुः ।

बादरायणसंबन्धः यूयं यूयं वयं वयम् ॥

%

% अयं निजः परः वा इति गणना लघुचेतसाम् । उदारचरितानां तु वसुधा एव कुटुंबकम् ॥ %

This one belongs to my group, the other one is an outsider - This is the thought of petty people; for the magnanimous, broadminded person, the whole world is family.

"This is mine, That is thine Small man divvies superfine Big man say What the hay Whole world is my familay" %

यस्य अस्ति वित्तं सः नरः कुलीनः

सः पण्डितः सः श्रुतवान् गुणज्ञः ।

सः एव वक्ता सः च दर्शनीयः

सर्वे गुणाः काञ्चनम् आश्रयन्ते ॥

The man who has money is (regarded as ) one from a good family, he is a scholar, and he is well versed in the scriptures, he is a patron of good qualities, he is the only speaker, and he is handsome \dots All qualities take shelter with gold. %

अक्रोधः तपसः क्षमा बलवतां धर्मस्य निर्व्याजता ।

सर्वेषाम् अपि सर्व कारणम् इदं शीलं परं भूषणम् ॥

क्वचित् विद्वद्गोष्ठी क्वचित् अपि सुरामत्तकलहः

क्वचित् वीणावाद्यं क्वचित् अपि च हा हा इति रुदितम् ।

क्वचित् रामा रम्या क्वचित् अपि जराजर्जरतनुः

न जाने संसारः किं अमृतमयः किं विषमयः ॥

Some find themselves in the company of great scholars; some associate with squabbling ruffians. Some get to play the Vina, some spend their time weeping. Some are blessed with great looks, some have old and decaying bodies\dots In this life, who knows whose life would be blissful and whose poisonous.

"Shooting breeze with coolest dudes, but sometimes drunken brawling, sometimes strumming mellow tunes and sometimes childish bawling, dolled up in youth's flush, then arthritis, or epilepsy, life is flowing on, but is it coke or is it pepsi?" %

केयुराः न विचूषयन्ति पुरुषं, हाराः न चंद्रोज्ज्वलाः

न स्नानं, न विलेपनं, न कुसुमं, न अलंकृता मूर्धजाः ।

वाणी एका समलंकरोति पुरुषं, या संस्कृता धार्यते

क्षीयंते खलु भूषणानि सततं वाग्भूषणं भूषणम् ॥

Peacock feathers are not the true adornment of man, not glistening-as-the-moon necklaces either, neither are bathing and decorating and flowers , noble speech is the only true adornment, it is the basis of culture,

गुणः भूषयते रूपं शीलं भूषयते कुलम् ।

सिद्धिः भूषयते विद्यां भोगः भूषयते धनम् ॥

%

Character makes good looks prettier, a clan's reputation is made higher by conduct, (theoretical) learning is enhanced by practical accomplishments and money's worth is enhanced by spending it.

अनर्घम् अपि माणिक्यम् हेमाश्रयम् अपेक्षते ।

विना आश्रयं न शोभन्ते पंडिताः वनिताः लताः ॥

%

Even priceless gems look for the refuge of gold (i.e. even gems need to be affixed to gold to be made into ornaments and appreciated) even so, the following need support to truly shine : scholars, creepers and women.

"A gem looks like a camelturd if it's not set in gold A creeper, like cold spaghetti, without a wall to hold A poet, like a game-show host, outside a patron's fold A chick without a man is too pathetic to behold." %

कन्या वरौते रूपं माता वित्तं पिता श्रुतम् ।

बान्धवाः कुलम् इच्छन्ति मिष्टान्नम् इतरे जनाः ॥

( When a girl gets married ) The girl is interested in the man's looks; the mother in how wealthy he is; the father in his qualifications the relatives in his family status, the other guests merely in the feast.

वैद्यराज नमः तुभ्यं यमराजसहोदर ।

यमः तु हरति प्राणान् वैद्यराजः धनानि च ॥

%

Greetings (namastubhyam) to the doctor (vaidyaraaja) who is the friend (brother?) of yama. While yama only takes life, vaidyaraaj takes life and wealth too!

% अमंत्रम् अक्षरं नास्ति नास्ति मूलम् अनौषधम् । अयोग्यः पुरुषः नास्ति योजकः तत्र दुर्लभः ॥ %

"No letter be too nasty for a hum, no root too nasty as a healing dose, no man a nasty good-for-nothing bum. Good MBA find use for all of those." %

अनित्यानि शरीराणि विभवः नैव शाश्वतः ।

नित्यं संनिहितः मृत्युः कर्तव्यः धर्मसंग्रहः ॥

"Immortal soul can go AWOL from body, in a flash, and large amount in bank account lasts till the next big crash, so pursue dharma not just firmer muscle, bigger cash." %

ददाति प्रतिगृण्हाति गुह्यमाख्याति पृच्छति ।

भुङ्ते भोजयते चैव षड्विधं प्रीतिलक्षणम् ॥

सुभाषितेन गीतेन युवतीनां च लीलया ।

मनो न भिद्यते यस्य स वै मुक्तोऽथवा पशुः ॥

%

If a man is not seduced by sweet music or the plays of young women, he must be either an enlightened sage, or an (unfeeling) animal.

उपक्रमोपसंहारो अभ्यासेऽपूर्वता फलम् ।

अर्थवादोपपत्ती च लिंगं तात्पर्यनिर्णये ॥

सामान्यमेतत्पशुभिर्नराणाम् ।

धर्मोहि तेषामधिको विशेषो

धर्मेण हीनाः पशुभिः समानाः ॥

Eating and sleeping and having sex are all common to both animals and humans; what is special about men is their consciousness of Dharma - a man without the feeling of Dharma is comparable to an animal।

कस्यैकांतं सुखमुपनतं दुःखमेकान्ततो वा ।

नीचैर्गच्छत्युपति च दशा चक्रनेमिक्रमेण ॥

चतुरंग बलो राजा जगतीं वशमानयेत् ।

अहं पंचांग बलवानाकाशं वशमानये ॥

%

ना गुणी गुणिनाम् वेत्ति गुणी गुणीषु मत्सरी ।

गुणी च गुणरागी च विरलः सरलो जनः ॥

%

Those who do not have talent do not recognize other talented people and those who are talented envy other talented people. Those who are themselves talented and love other talented persons, such simple people are rare indeed.

अष्टादश पुराणेषु व्यासस्य वचनद्वयम् ।

परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ॥

%

In all the eighteen Puranas, Shri Vyasa has two significant utterrings: serving others is a good deed, and it is a sin to inflict pain onto others.

स्वच्छंदं दलदर्विंदम्

ते मरंदं विंदंतो विदधतु ते मिलिंदाः ।

आमोदानथ हरिदंतराणि नेतुम्

नैवान्यो जगति समीरणात् प्रवीणः ॥

%

Oh, free(ly blooming) lotus of the waters bumble bees (surrounding you) are for taking your *NECTAR* but to take your fragrance in all directions there is none more capable than the wind.

आशाणां मनुष्याणां काचिदाश्चर्य शृंखला ।

बद्धा यया प्रधावंति मुक्तास्तिश्ठंति पंगुवत ॥

%

Hope is an amazing bonding chain of man. Those who are bonded by it run, and those who are free, remain immobile like disabled.

मनस्यन्यद्वचस्यन्यत्कार्यमन्यद् दुरात्मनाम् ।

मनस्येकं वचस्येकं कर्मण्येकं महात्मनाम् ॥

%

The mind, speech, and action of downfallen people function in an uncoordinated manner, where as those of great souls display one pointedness।

विद्या नाम नरस्य रूपमधिकं प्रच्छन्नगुप्तं धनम्

विद्या भोगकरी यशःसुखकरी विद्या गुरुणां गुरुः ।

विद्या बंधुजनो विदेशगमने विद्या परं दैवतम्

विद्या राजसु पूज्यते न तु धनं विद्याविहीनः पशुः ॥

Knowledge is the highest beauty in man and it is the secret wealth. Success comes to those who have knowledge and they really enjoy and make merry. Knowledge is the highest preceptor itself. When one is in foreign land, knowledge is the closest friend and supreme guide. Knowledge, not wealth, is really respected and revered by the rulers. One without knowledge is like an animal.

विद्या मित्रं प्रवासेषु, भार्या मित्रं गृहेषु च ।

व्याधितस्यौषधं मित्रं, धर्मो मित्रं मृतस्य च ॥

Knowledge is a friend in distant lands. Wife is a friend at home. To the sick the right medicine is a friend. Dharma (righteousness) is a friend even beyond the grave.

रूपयौवनसंपन्ना विशालकुलसंभवाः ।

विद्याहीना न शोभन्ते निर्गन्धा किंशुका इव ॥

%

They who have charm and youthfulness, born in great family, yet without education they do not shine, as the `kimshuka' which have beauty but no fragrance.

%

पुस्तकस्या तु या विद्या, परहस्तगतं धनम् ।

कार्यकाले समुत्पन्ने, न सा विद्या न तद्धनम् ॥

%

Knowledge that is in note-books in (our) shelves, and (our) money now in the hands of others, both are useless. When time comes for their use neither that knowledge nor that wealth will be available.

भाषासु मुख्या मधुरा, दिव्या गिर्वाण भारती ।

तस्माद्भिः काव्यं मधुरं, तस्मादपि सुभाषितम् ॥

%

Among the main languages, the resplendent, ancient, language (of the gods) sanskrit is very melodious, sweeter is a poem in it, and even sweeter is a subhashita form.

तर्को प्रतिष्ठा श्रुतयो विभिन्ना

नैको मुनिर्यस्य गतः प्रमाणम् ।

धर्मस्य तत्वं निहितं गुहायाम्

महाजनो येन गतः सपन्थाः ॥

सज्जनस्य हृदयं नवनीतम्

यद्वदन्ति कवयस्तदलीकम् ।

अन्य देह विलसत परितापात्

सज्जनः द्रवति न नवनीतम् ॥

The heart of a kind/decent/good person is like butter so say poets but it is false. When the distress (heat) is directed at another body the kind person('s heart) melts, but butter does not.

लालयेत् पंचवर्षाणि दशवर्शाणि ताडयेत् ।

प्राप्तेषु षोडषे वर्षे पुत्रे मित्रवदाचरेत् ॥

(The rules regarding handling the children are explained here) Allow pampering of the children for (first) five years, reprimand them (after that) for ten years, (but) once they become sixteen years of age treat them like friends.

अहं च त्वं च राजेन्द्र लोकनाथावुभावपि ।

बहुव्रीहिरहं राजन् षष्ठितत्पुरुषो भवान् ॥

O king, both of us are Lokanaath`s. But, I am a Bahuvriihi lokanaath \dots (the one whose masters are the people) and you are a ShhashhThi Tatpurushh. (the master of the people).

(There are different ways of breaking combo-words in Sanskrit. These are called Samaas. A Bahuvriihi samaas breaks a word (A)(B) as: f(A) (or F(b)) whose/whom /which/who/etc g(A) (or G(B)) and a ShhashhThi tatpurushha breaks it as, A of B or B`s A (or vice-versa)).

तार तार तरेरेतैरुत्तरोत्तरतोरुतैः ।

रतार्ता तित्तिरी रौति तेएरे तेएरे तरौ तरौ ॥

Love thirsty she-bird (it is a female Titar bird = tittirii), while wandering on river banks and trees, cries in a crescendo (a pitch that increses in loudness with time variable). (This is a classic example of humorous alliteration (anupraas). The last combination of words is broken like taraiH etaiH uttarittartaH utaiH.)

भो दारिद्र्यं नमस्तुभ्यं तत्प्रसादात् मया च्चुतः ।

पश्याम्यहं जगत.ः सर्वं न मां पश्यति कश्चन ॥

Hail poverty, you have set me free. It is because of you, that I can see everybody else, but nobody can see me.

चितां प्रज्वलितां दृष्ट्वा वैद्यो विस्मयमागतः ।

नाहं गतः न मे भ्राता कस्यैदं हस्तलाघवं ॥

On seeing a burning body (funeral), a doctor remarks with dismay, `I have not attended the dead bloke, nor have my brothers-in-business, then who has come up with this sleight of hand?`

घटं भिन्द्यात् पटं छिन्द्यात् कुर्यात रासभरोहणं ।

येन केन प्रकरेण प्रसिद्धः पुरुषो भवेत् ॥

By breaking pots, tearing clothes, or riding on a donkey, a man(/woman) tries to be famous by hook or crook.

कमले ब्रह्मा शेते, हरः शेते हिमालये ।

क्षीरब्धौ च हरिः शेते, मन्ये मत्कुणशन्कय ॥

Lord Brahma sleeps on a lotus, Lord Shiva sleeps in Himalaya, Lord Vishnu sleeps in Ksheersaagar, all due to the fear of bugs in their bed.

सुभाषितानि ०२[सम्पादन]

अतिपरिचयादवज्ञा ।

अतिलोभो विनाशाय ।

अतितृष्णा न कर्तव्या ।

अति सर्वत्र वर्जयेत् ।

अधिकस्याधिकं फलम् ।

अनतिक्रमणीया हि नियतिः ।

अल्पश्च कालो बहवश्च विघ्नाः ।

अलभ्यो लाभः ।

अव्यापारेषु व्यापारः ।

अहिंसा परमो धर्मः ।

उत्पद्यन्ते विलीयन्ते दरिद्राणां मनोरथाः ।

कर्तव्यो महदाश्रयः ।

कवयः किं न पश्यन्ति ?

काव्यशास्त्रविनोदेन कालो गच्छति धीमताम् ।

कालाय तस्मै नमः ।

किमिव हि मधुराणां मण्डनं नाकृतीनाम् ।

किमिव हि दुष्करमकरुणानाम् ।

किं मिष्टमन्नं खरसूकराणाम् \?

११५ सुभाषितानि (आंग्ल-अर्थ सहितम्)[सम्पादन]



*1. अतिपरिचयादवज्ञा (= अतिपरिचयात् अवज्ञा) = Familiarity breads contempt. Beginning of a सुभाषितम् "अतिपरिचयादवज्ञा संततगमनादनादरो भवति । मलये भिल्लपुरंध्री चन्दनतरुकाष्ठमिंधनं कुरुते ॥" meaning, "Familiarity breads contempt and frequenting brings disrespect. (For example) a tribal woman in Malay mountains would burn sandalwood as firewood."

*2. अतिलोभो विनाशाय = Greed will kill (is poison)

*3. अति सर्वत्र वर्जयेत् = Excess of anything should be avoided (is bad)

*4. अति तृष्णा न कर्तव्या = Too much hankering is bad

*5. अधिकस्य अधिकं फलम् = More the merrier

*6. अनतिक्रमणीया हि नीतिः = Codes should not be transcended

*7. अल्पश्च कालो बहवश्च विघ्नाः = Time is short and obstacles are many.

*8. अव्यापारेषु व्यापारः = Trading in non-tradeables. In श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता "श्रेयान् स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मो भयावहः ।" This is only line which is repeated ditto in the whole of श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता first at 3-35 and also at 18-47. It is that important. It means, "It is advisable to be with one's own inherent character, howsoever unimpressive. (Thinking of adopting) character of others is frightful."

*9. अहिंसा परमो धर्मः = Non-violence is the supreme code of conduct

*10. अलभ्यो लाभः = Unattainable gain, A windfall. For example, being able to meet a dignitary, whom you would have never dreamt of being able to meet, becomes an unattainable gain, a windfall.

*11. अभद्रं भद्रं वा विधिलिखितमुन्मूलयति कः (विधिलिखितमुन्मूलयति =विधिलिखितम् उन्मूलयति) = Good or bad, can anyone avoid or evade the destiny? In Hindi, होनी को कौन टाल सकता है ?

*12. अर्थो हि लोके पुरुषस्य बन्धुः = Money only is the true friend.

*13. आकृतिर्बकस्य दृष्टिस्तु काकस्य = Personality of a crane, but looks of (hovering eyesight like that of) a crow

*14. आये दुःखं व्यये दुःखं धिगर्थाः (=धिक् अर्थाः) कष्टसंश्रयाः = Hate the Moneys which prove troublesome whether by income or outgo

*15. इक्षुः मधुरोऽपि समूलं न भक्ष्यः = Sugarcane, even if it is sweet is not to be eaten along with its roots.

*16. इतः कूपः ततस्तटी = This side a dug well and that side a trench

*17. इतो भ्रष्टः ततो भ्रष्टः = Unethical here, unethical there

*18. ईश्वरेच्छा बलीयसी = God's will prevails

*19. उत्पद्यन्ते विलीयन्ते दरिद्राणां मनोरथाः = Dreams of the poor crop up and vanish

*20. उत्सवप्रियाः खलु मनुषाः = People are given to festivities

*21. कण्टकेनैव कण्टकमुद्धरेत् (= कण्टकेन एव कण्टकं उद्धरेत्) = Use a thorn to remove a thorn

*22. कर्तव्यो महदाश्रयः = Keep company of the noble. In मेघदूतम् कालिदास says, "याञ्चा मोघा वरमधिगुणे नाधमे लब्धकामा" It means, "Better to seek prayers of the better ones, even if they may not fructify, than to seek from the mean ones, even if they may have better chance of getting fulfilled."

*23. कवयः किं न पश्यन्ति = Is there anything that is beyond the imagination of poets?

*24. काव्यशास्त्रविनोदेन कालो गच्छति धीमताम् = Intelligent people engage themselves in poetry, sciences, entertainment. An interesting quote in similar vein is, "The knowledgeable ones discuss thoughts, commoners discuss events, the unintelligent discuss people."

*25. कालाय तस्मै नमः = Time and tide wait for none. In similar vein, न कालेन समौषधम् meaning, "Time is the best healer."

*26. किमिव हि मधुराणां मण्डनं नाकृतीनाम् (नाकृतीनाम् = न + आकृतीनाम् or = न + अकृतीनाम्) = ?

*27. किमिव हि दुष्करमकरुणानाम् (= दुष्करं अकरुणानाम्) = What is impossible for the heartless?

*28. किमिष्टमन्नं खरसूकराणाम् = What of sweets to donkeys and pigs? In Marathi, गाढवाला गुळाची चव काय ? means, "What taste donkeys have for jaggery ?"

*29. क्षमया किं न सिद्ध्यति = What can not be achieved by pardon ? or What cannot be achieved by saying "sorry" ?

*30. क्लेशः फलेन हि पुनर्नवतां विधत्ते = If one trouble succeeds in troubling, it keeps coming back in newer forms. In similar vein, छिद्रेष्वनर्था बहुली भवन्ति means, "Once there is a hole, drains increase."

*31. गतं न शोच्यम् = Let bygone be bygone.

*32. गतानुगतिको लोको न कश्चित् पारमार्थिकः = People conduct rooted in conventions. Rarely there is anyone, who seeks the supreme meaning.

*33. गहना कर्मणो गतिः = This is last part in a shloka in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता कर्मणो ह्यपि बोद्धव्यं बोद्धव्यं च विकर्मणः । अकर्मणश्च बोद्धव्यं गहना कर्मणो गतिः ॥४-१७॥ meaning, "It becomes a matter of very deep thinking to understand what Karma is. It is to be understood by Karma, as it presents itself , also by its anti-theses and also by its non-being."

*34. गुणाः सर्वत्र पूज्यन्ते = Virtues are respected everywhere.

*35. चक्रवत्परिवर्तन्ते दुःखानि च सुखानि च = Sorrows and happiness keep coming and going in cyclic order as a turning wheel. This quotation is, I think, from "svapnavaasavadattam" by dramatist Bhaasa. The quotation at #57 has almost identical meaning and is from मेघदूतम् by कालिदास

*36. जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी = Mother and motherland are more respectable than even heaven. (Source ?)

*37. जलबिन्दुनिपातेन क्रमशः पूर्यते घटः = Drops fill up a pitcher. In Hindi it is exactly translated as बूँद बूँद से घडा भरता है In Marathi थेंबे थेंबे तळे साचे means, "drop by drop it becomes a lake"

*38. जीवो जीवस्य जीवनम् = Lives survive, one on another. Another version of this is जीवो जीवस्य भोजनम् means "one life is food of another."

*39. त्रुटितः सम्बन्धः प्रशान्तः कलहः = Relationship severed, quarrel pacified. In Marathi, "एक घाव, दोन तुकडे" means "One stroke, two pieces!!"

*40. त्रैलोक्ये दीपकः धर्मः = Dharma i.e. righteous conduct is the guiding light, beacon, in all three worlds (here, in nether world and in heaven)

*41. दुर्लभं भारते जन्म मानुष्यं तत्र दुर्लभम् = Difficult i.e. not in everyone's luck to be borne in India. It is further difficult to born as a human being.

*42. दूरतः पर्वताः रम्याः = Mountains are beautiful from a distance. In Marathi, this is exactly translated as दुरून डोंगर साजरे

*43. द्रव्येण सर्वे वशाः = All can be commanded by wealth

*44. धर्मो मित्रं मृतस्य = Religion is a friend of the dead (?)

*45. धीराः हि तरन्त्यापदम् (तरन्त्यापदम् = तरन्ति आपदम्) = The bold conquer obstacles

*46. नास्ति सत्यसमो धर्मः = There is no religion equal to the Truth

*47. न कूपखननं युक्तं प्रदीप्ते वन्हिना गृहे = It is no use digging a well when the house is on fire

*48. न भूतो न भविष्यति = Hasn't been, shall not be. The phrase is used to describe an unparalleled event or person. For example, a Mahatma like Gandhi has not been, shall not be.

*49. न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते = There is nothing as sacrosanct as (true) knowledge. This is first line in a shloka in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता where the second line is तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्धः कालेनात्मनि विन्दति ॥४-३८॥

*50. न शान्तेः परमं सुखम् = There is no happiness more sublime than peace

*51. निगूढेऽपि कुक्कुटे उदेत्येव अरुणः = Hiding the hen cannot stop the sun from rising

*52. निर्वाणदीपे किमु तैलदानम् = What use is putting oil in a lamp, where the flame is put out ? Locking the stable after the horse is stolen.

*53. निरस्तपादपे देशे एरण्डोऽपि द्रुमायते = In a plant-less desert, even a shrub of castor looks like a (banyan) tree.

*54. निःस्पृहस्य तृणं जगत् = To a person, who has transcended all desires, the whole world is but a blade of grass.

*55. न निश्चितार्थात् विरमन्ति धीराः = The determined never halt until they achieve their goals

*56. निर्धनस्य कुतः सुखम् =Can a poor be happy ?

*57. नीचैर्गच्छत्युपरि च दशा चक्रनेमिक्रमेण = Our conditions go cyclically up and down like the spokes of a wheel. See #35 also.

*58. परदुःखं शीतलम् = Other's sorrow is cool (is no sorrow).

*59. परोपकारार्थमिदं शरीरम् = This body is for service unto others

*60. परोपदेशे पाण्डित्यम् = Sporting wisdom in advising others

*61. परोपकाराय सतां विभूतयः = Lives of the noble are for gracing others

*62. पुनः पुनरपि प्रक्षाल्य कज्जलं न श्वेतायते = You may wash coal again and again, but it will never become white.

*63. पिण्डे पिण्डे मतिर्भिन्ना = Many people, many minds. Literally, every brain has a different mind. This line is actually the beginning of a सुभाषितम्. The other lines are कुण्डे कुण्डे नवं पयः । जातौ जातौ नवाचारा नवा वाणी मुखे मुखे ॥ meaning "every pond has different water, every community has its own rituals, every mouth has different speech."

*64. प्रज्ज्वालितो ज्ञानमयः प्रदीपः = Lamp of knowledge is lit

*65. प्रथमग्रासे मक्षिकापातः = Find a fly in the first sip.

*66. पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलमन्नं सुभाषितम् = There are only three true jewels - water, food and good sayings. This line is actually the first line of a सुभाषितम्. The other line is मूढैः पाषाणखण्डेषु रत्नसंज्ञा विधीयते meaning, "fools call bits of stone as jewels."

*67. बधिरात् मन्दकर्णः श्रेयान् = A person slow of hearing is better than a deaf.

*68. बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय = For the good of many, for happiness of many.

*69. बहुरत्ना वसुन्धरा = Earth is a treasure of jewels.

*70. बालानां रोदनं बलम् = Crying is the strength (weapon) of children (to get, what they want).

*71. बुद्धिः कर्मानुसारिणी = Actions cultivate the intellect.

*72. बुद्धिर्यस्य बलं तस्य = He is strong, who has intelligence. "Pen is mightier than the sword" sounds synonymous.

*73. भद्रं कर्णेभिः श्रुणुयाम देवाः = Gods! May we get to listen only good things by our ears!! The Shaanti-mantra of many stotras, e.g. श्रीगणपत्यथर्वशीर्षम् and others, especially those corollary to Atharva-Veda begin with this phrase. The next phrase is ॐ भद्रं पश्येमाक्षभिर्यजत्राः meaning "May we get to see, after our prayers, only good and benevolent things by our eyes". These two phrases bring to mind idols of three monkeys one having eyes shut, another having ears shut and the third having mouth shut."

*74. भवन्ति भवितव्यानां द्वाराणि सर्वत्र = Providence provides doors all over.

*75. भिन्नरुचिर्हि लोकः = People have different tastes. This fact of difference in tastes भिन्नरुचि: has been very beautifully employed by the great poet कालिदास in मालविकाग्निमित्रम् saying, "देवानामिदमामनन्ति मुनयः कान्तं क्रतुं चाक्षुषम् । रुद्रेणेदमुमाकृतव्यतिकरे स्वाङ्गे विभक्तं द्विधा । त्रैगुण्योद्भवमत्र लोकचरितं नानारसं दृश्यते । नाट्यं भिन्नरुचेर्जनस्य बहुधाऽप्येकं समाराधनम् ॥" meaning, "The Muni's say, (a drama) is a divine ceremony very dear to Gods. By his communion with Uma, Rudra put it forth in two aspects (laasya and taaNDava) by division of his own body. Likes and dislikes of people are seen to be different as they show different shades of the three characteristics (sattva, rajas and taamas). Yet a (good) drama would give enjoyment to all."

*76. मधु तिष्ठति जिव्हाग्रे हृदये तु हलाहलम् = Has honey on the tip of the tongue, but poison in the heart.

*77. मनः पूतं समाचरेत् = Act by your own discretion.

*78. मनोरथानामगतिर्न विद्यते = Dreams know no holds.

*79. मरणं प्रकृतिः शरीरिणाम् = Death is natural to everyone born. A good way to give solace to the ones bereaved by the death of near and dear ones. See, also in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, "जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युः ... ॥२-२७॥ meaning, "what is born, will die."

*80. महाजनो येन गतः स पन्थाः = Two different meanings of this. (1) Great are those who followed this path (2) That should be the path, by which the great ones went. In meaning (1) "this path" means the path in search of the ultimate truth. This quotation is Yudhishthir's answer to one of the 30-odd questions asked by Yaksha the यक्षप्रश्नाः

*81. मार्गारब्धाः सर्वयत्नाः फलन्ति = Once efforts are undertaken, they will succeed. "Try and try forever and you will succeed."

*82. मातृदेवो भव = Be one who would respect mother as God. I would consider मातृदेवो i.e. मातृदेव: as a compound word माता एव देवः यस्मै सः (चतुर्थी बहुव्रीहि समास)

*83. पितृदेवो भव = As above, "Be one who would respect father as God"

*84. आचार्यदेवो भव = As above, "Be one who would respect teacher the preceptor as God"

*85. अतिथिदेवो भव = As above, "Be one who would respect a guest (an uninvited guest also) as God" अतिथि: is actually तिथिः न (अस्ति) यस्य सः - (नञ् बहुव्रीहि समास) one who does not come by an appointment, so अतिथि: = uninvited guest

*86. मूढः परप्रत्यनेयबुद्धिः = Fools (people of low intellect) will only follow. Only intelligent one can lead.

*87. मृदुर्हि परिभूयते = Softness is encompassing. Most true of softness of speech. Have harsh words ever helped anybody?

*88. मौनं सर्वार्थसाधनम् = Silence is golden

*89. यथा बीजं तथाङ्कुरः = As you sow, sow you reap.

*90. यथा राजा तथा प्रजा = As the king, so the subjects. Almost identical is राजा कालस्य कारणम् = Responsibility will finally vest with king (the chief executive) In श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता also "यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठः तत्तदेवेतरो जनः । स यत् प्रमाणं लोकस्तदनुवर्तते ॥३-२१॥

*91. यद्वा तद्वा भविष्यति = Garbage in garbage out. Last phrase in a सुभाषितम् "मर्कटस्य सुरापानं तस्य वृश्चिकदंशनं । तन्मध्ये भूतसंचारो ॥ meaning Think of a monkey, gets drunk, is bitten by a scorpion and is further afflicted by a ghost.. the result is anybody's guess!

*92. यद्वा तद्वा वदति = Speaks whatever!

*93. याचको याचकं दृष्ट्वा श्वानवद्गुर्गुरायते = Like dogs, a beggar purrs at another beggar. There is another सुभाषितम् काक आव्हयते काकान् याचको न तु याचकान् । काकयाचकयोर्मध्ये वरं काको न याचकः ॥ meaning, "A crow crows to call other crows. But one beggar does not call another. Between crows and beggars, the crow seem to be the better ones!

*94. यादृशं वपते बीजं तादृशं लभते फलम् = As you sow, sow you reap.

*95. यः क्रियावान् स पण्डितः = One who exemplifies by own conduct is really the knowledgeable.

*96. युद्धस्य कथा रम्या = "War-stories are entertaining." What if you have to yourself go to the battle-front?

*97. येन केन प्रकारेण प्रसिद्धः पुरुषो भवेत् = Do anything to become known ? The previous line is घटं भिन्द्यात् पटं छिन्द्यात् कुर्याद्वा रासभध्वनिम् break the pots, tear the clothes or bray like a donkey. ... Do anything to become known

*98. योजकस्तत्र दुर्लभः = Good managers are rare.

*99. राजा कालस्य कारणम् = Responsibility will finally vest with king (the chief executive)

*100. वन्दे मातरम् = I bow to Mother

*101. वक्ता दशसहस्रेषु = One in ten thousand may be a good speaker

*102. वचने किं दरिद्रता = Why have poverty in speech?

*103. विद्वान् सर्वत्र पूज्यते = The magi are respected everywhere. Last phrase in a सुभाषितम् where it is also mentioned राजा पूज्यते देशे meaning, a king is respected in his own country

*104. विद्याधनं सर्वधनप्रधानम् = Wealth of knowledge is the most precious wealth

*105. विनाशकाले विपरीतबुद्धिः = In bad times, all discretion is lost.

*106. शठं प्रति शाठ्यम् = Tit for tat

*107. शरीरमाद्यं खलु धर्मसाधनम् = Doing any good work demands, first and foremost, physical fitness

*108. शीलं परं भूषणम् = Character is the most precious ornament. This was the motto of our high school in Jamkhandi. Last phrase in a सुभाषितम् "ऐश्वर्यस्य विभूषणम् सुजनता शौर्यस्य वाक्संयमो ..."

*109. शुभास्ते सन्तु पन्थानः = May you have a safe journey. KaNva munee to Shakuntalaa in अभिज्ञानशाकुंतलम्

*110. शुभं भवतु = May everything be fine

*111. सत्यमेव जयते नानृतम् = Inscription on India's emblem. असतो मा सद्गमय ... अनृतान्मा ऋतं गमय

*112. सत्यं कण्ठस्य भूषणम् = Truth is the right ornament for the throat (neck). Part of a सुभाषितम्

*113. सुखमुपदिश्यते परस्य = Easier said than done. मराठी म्हण "लोकां सांगे ब्रम्हज्ञान"

*114. संहतिः कार्यसाधिका = Together we prosper. Panchatatra story of Birds caught in a net fly carrying the net itself

*115. स्वभावो दुरतिक्रमः = Basic character is difficult to change. "Habits die hard"! मराठी म्हण "सुंभ जळला तरी पीळ जळत नाही."
